The IMF publishes a range of time series data on IMF lending, exchange rates and other economic and financial indicators. Manuals, guides, and other material on statistical practices at the IMF, in member countries, and of the statistical community at large are also available.

World Economic Outlook Databases (WEO)
Download time series data for GDP growth, inflation, unemployment, payments balances, exports, imports, external debt, capital flows, commodity prices, more.

International Financial Statistics (IFS) 5-day-trial
Approximately 32,000 time series covering more than 200 countries starting in 1948. Includes exchange rates, Fund accounts and the main global and country economic indicators.order here

Principal Global Indicators (PGI)
A website that brings together data for the major economies available from international agencies covering the financial, governmental, external, and real sectors, and provides links to data in web sites of international and national agencies.

Public Sector Debt Statistics Online Centralized Database
A joint World Bank-IMF database that presents public sector debt statistics (general government plus public corporations) with quarterly frequency. Breakdowns by level of government, type of instrument, currency, and maturity are provided, using standard definitions to support cross-country comparisons.

Joint External Debt Hub
Database that brings together data on external debt and selected foreign assets available from international agencies (creditor/market sources) and external debt data available from the QEDS database (national/debtor sources).

Quarterly External Debt Statistics (QEDS)
External debt data reported by SDDS subscribers (extended to a number of GDDS economies in early 2008), with additional details on currency composition, debt service profile, and other presentations that facilitate cross-country data analysis.

Balance of Payments Statistics (BOPS) 5-day-trial
The BOPS yearbook includes annual aggregate and detailed time series for balance of payments and international investment position for countries; provides world and regional tables of balance of payments components and aggregates; and descriptions of methodologies, compilation practices and data sources used by individual countries. order here

Coordinated Portfolio Investment Survey (CPIS) new
The CPIS collects information on the stock of cross-border holdings of equities and long- and short-term debt securities broken down by the economy of residence of the issuer. Data now available also through IMF eLibrary-Data.

Coordinated Direct Investment Survey (CDIS) updated
The CDIS collects data and metadata on inward and outward direct investment positions cross-classified by counterpart economy. Separate data on equity and debt positions, and other breakdowns, are provided. Data are available also through the IMF eLibrary-Data.

 

IMF eLibrary-Data new
Provides comprehensive trial and subscription access to IFS, BOPS, DOTS, GFS and free access to a range of additional IMF datasets. Access free data; order subscription; free trial; journalists.

Currency Composition of Official Foreign Exchange Reserves (COFER)
End-of-period quarterly data on the currency composition of official foreign exchange reserves. Data presented in CSV and PDF are aggregated data. Data now available also through IMF eLibrary-Data.

Financial Access Survey (FAS) updated
Provides annual geographic and demographic data on access to basic consumer financial services worldwide. This is achieved through the identification and development of appropriate high quality data that are comparable across countries and over time collected by means of periodic surveys.

Financial Soundness Indicators (FSIs)
Provides data and detailed metadata reported on a regular basis by a first batch of member countries for 12 core and 28 encouraged FSIs. Countries may report monthly, quarterly, semiannual, or annual FSIs for dissemination. The IMF will aim over time to expand the list of reporting member countries.

Direction of Trade Statistics (DOTS) 5-day-trial
Provides data on the country and area distribution of countries' exports and imports by their partners.
The DOTS yearbook gives seven years of data for about 187 countries.
The DOTS quarterly covers data for the most recent six quarters and the latest year for about 156 countries, and ten quarters and five years for the world and area tables. order here

Primary Commodity Prices
Indices in terms of dollars or sdrs, indices of market prices for non-fuel commodities and petroleum, actual market prices for non-fuel commodities and petroleum, and average weekly prices for non-fuel commodities and petroleum.

Data Template on International Reserves and Foreign Currency Liquidity
Re-disseminates IMF member countries' data on international reserves and foreign currency liquidity in a common template and in a common currency (the U.S. dollar). Historical data by country and selected topics are also available.

Government Finance Statistics (GFS) 5-day-trial
Contains detailed annual statistical data on revenue, expense, transactions in assets and liabilities, and stocks of assets and liabilities of general government and its subsectors as reported by member countries.order here

Dissemination Standards Bulletin Board (DSBB) newlook
Established to guide countries in the provision of their economic and financial data to the public.

General Data Dissemination System (GDDS)
Provides recommendations on good practice for the production and dissemination of statistics. See our Guide for Participants and Users and our assessment of the last ten years of GDDS (January, 2008) . The purpose of this Guide is to explain the nature and objectives of the General Data Dissemination System, to describe its operational features, and to provide practical guidance to IMF member countries that are, or are considering, participation in the GDDS. Additional translations (Arabic, French, Russian, and Spanish) are being prepared and will be available shortly.

 

Special Data Dissemination Standard (SDDS)
Established to guide IMF members that have, or that might seek, access to international capital markets in the provision of their economic and financial data to the public. The Special Data Dissemination Standard: Guide for Subscribers and Users is available (pdf, in English) provides guidance on the observance of the Standard's various requirements. This Guide incorporates updates to the SDDS made by the IMF Executive Board in its reviews of the Standard since 1996.

Update of the Monetary and Financial Statistics Manual (MFSM) and the Monetary and Financial Statistics Compilation Guide (MFSCG)
The MFSM and MFSCG, published by the IMF in 2000 and 2008, respectively, are being updated to align their contents with the changes resulting from the move to 2008 System of National Accounts (SNA) from 1993 SNA and to incorporate a number of methodological and operational enhancements. The IMF Statistics Department (STA) is leading this work with the view to completing it by end-2013. As part of this process, the current MFSM and MFSCG will be merged in one single document. Central bank officials responsible for MFS have been invited to contribute to this effort, including by reviewing and providing comments throughout the envisaged process. A draft of the new joint Manual–Compilation Guide is expected to be posted for public comment in the first half of 2013.
An Annotated Outline for the forthcoming Monetary and Financial Statistics Manual and Compilation Guide has been posted publicly. An Issues Paper has also been posted publicly. The public comment period on the Issues Paper closed on January 13, 2012.
Drawing from the comments received on the Issues Paper, STA has prepared a Discussion Note to facilitate an upcoming meeting of senior-level experts on MFS convened to discuss the update of the MFSM and MFSCG at IMF Headquarters during February 22-23, 2012. Some 40 representatives from about 30 countries and 10 international or regional organizations will attend the meeting (see Preliminary Agenda)

Update on the Financial Soundness Indicators Reference Group (FSIRG) Meeting
The FSIRG met at IMF Headquarters in Washington, DC, during November 15-16, 2011, to review the current list of core (12) and encouraged (28) financial soundness indicators (FSIs) in the context of the G – 20 Data Gaps Initiative.

Representatives from 32 countries and 10 international organizations attended the meeting. The FSIRG's Summary of Key Points and Conclusions has been posted publicly. Based on this document, the IMF's Statistics Department (STA) is developing a work program on FSIs that will culminate with the production of a new revised FSIs Compilation Guide towards the end of calendar year 2013. The FSIRG and the broader community of national authorities of countries that are regular FSIs reporters to STA will remain closely engaged throughout this process.

Strengthening Sectoral Position and Flow Data in the Macroeconomic Accounts
IMF and OECD held a Conference on Strengthening Sectoral Position and Flow Data in the Macroeconomic Accounts at IMF headquarters February 28-March 2, 2011. Users and compilers of official statistics from the G-20 and other advanced economies shared experiences, discussed information gaps in their sectoral accounts, and agreed on a template based on existing statistical frameworks that would help to set national priorities for the compilation and dissemination of an internationally comparable minimum set of sectoral balance sheet, accumulation, and flow of funds accounts.

IMF Committee on Balance of Payments Statistics
The IMF Committee on Balance of Payments Statistics was established by the IMF’s Executive Board in 1992 to improve the availability, consistency, and reliability of balance of payments and international investment position statistics worldwide.

Working Group on Securities Databases
In July 2007, the Working Group on Securities Databases (WGSD), originally established in 1999, was reconvened in response to various international initiatives and recommendations to improve information on securities markets. The members of the WGSD are the IMF (chair), the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), the European Central Bank (ECB), and the World Bank. Selected experts from national central banks, who have participated actively in various international groups that have identified the need to improve data on securities markets, have also been invited to contribute to the deliberations of the WGSD.

The Handbook on Securities Statistics is the first publication of its kind to focus exclusively on securities statistics. Part 1 of the Handbook, which deals with debt securities issues, was published in May 2009. Part 2 of the Handbook, covering debt securities holdings, was published in September 2010. An overview of the joint work of these three institutions on the Handbook is also available.

Task Force on Finance Statistics (TFFS)
The TFFS sets methodological standards for statistics on external debt and on public debt; promotes data availability on financial stocks, particularly external debt; encourages internationally accepted statistical practices to enhance data quality; and fosters inter-agency collaboration in statistical capacity building.

Users Conference on the Financial Crisis and Information Gaps
The IMF and the FSB hosted a Users Conference during July 8-9, 2009 in Washington, D.C. International experts on financial stability and statistics from primarily G-20 economies and international agencies attended. The main purpose of the conference was to solicit views of users on which data gaps were most relevant in the build up to the crisis and on proposals for strengthening data collection going forward.

Inventory of Statistics on Cross-Border Exposures of Financial and Nonfinancial Corporations new
As part of the G-20 Data Gaps Initiative and responding to the needs for better understanding cross-border exposures of financial and nonfinancial corporations, a working group comprising the BIS, the ECB, the IMF, and the OECD have prepared an inventory of these statistics. The inventory identifies 29 databases that are maintained by the BIS, ECB, IMF, OECD, and the World Bank; and include information on various aspects of cross-border exposures of financial and nonfinancial corporations. The inventory can be accessed through the Principal Global Indicators (PGI) website of the Inter-Agency Group on Economic and Financial Statistics under the Additional Data Sources tab.
